What Happens in Counselling?

— For those struggling with family, parenting, workplace stress, or past trauma —

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a process where you work together with a qualified psychologist to explore and understand personal difficulties — such as family conflicts, parenting stress, relationship issues at work, or unresolved childhood trauma.

At Azabu Juban Clinic, our counsellors provide a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental space for you to talk about your concerns.
Unlike medical doctors or teachers who may give direct advice, clinical psychologists act as companions and facilitators, helping you to organise your thoughts and emotions at your own pace.

Through conversation, you may gradually find clarity, relief, and new perspectives that help you live more freely and authentically.

How Counselling Works

Step 1: Intake Session

During your first session, the counsellor will listen carefully to your main concerns and your current life situation.
We will go through relevant background information — such as family history, work stress, emotional patterns, and past treatment — to understand the challenges you are facing.

Step 2: Setting Goals and Direction

In the second and third sessions, you and your counsellor will discuss possible goals and the direction of therapy.
For example, this may include:

  • Improving relationships at work or home
  • Managing emotional reactions such as anger, guilt, or anxiety
  • Understanding patterns linked to your upbringing or family environment

Together, we will create a plan that feels realistic and supportive.

Step 3: Ongoing Counselling

After the initial few sessions, you will begin working on specific themes or emotional patterns.
Depending on your needs, various evidence-based approaches may be used — such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), or Brainspotting.

Some clients also explore how past experiences or trauma have shaped their current emotions and relationships.
Counselling can help you develop insight, emotional stability, and resilience in daily life.

How Often Should You Come?

Many clients continue counselling for six months to a year or longer.
Most start with once a month, and increase to twice a month during more difficult or stressful periods.

Changes usually appear gradually — as you start to notice that talking helps to clarify your thoughts, reduce emotional tension, and bring new understanding to your relationships.
